¿What are the surgical risks?

Every surgical procedure has a risk that can be controlled by the use of precaution measures to avoid complications. We request current pre-surgical tests in order to verify the state of health of the patient. Besides, we take a surgical risk which is an electrocardiogram and an evaluation by the cardiologist. When the patient is admitted, history data, allergic history, family diseases and coagulation problems, are entered. In summary, a detailed checking of the patient to assess his or her general condition is made.

¿How long is the surgery?

This varies, and depends upon the surgery to be done. More complex surgery takes more time, they are usually the ones where the surgeon carves face bones, obtains a new shape and tries to reach a harmonious face.

¿What type on anesthesia do you use general or local?

Craniofacial procedures use general anesthesia since surgical risk is better controlled this way, thus the anesthetist has a better control of the patient during surgery.

¿How long should I stay in the clinic?

Usually, patients remain in for one or two days. Real criteria are that the patient shall go back with his/her family as soon as possible. Controls are ambulatory (in office) and long term follow ups are made possible because of the videoconference system in order to give more comfort to the patient.

¿What post-surgical care shall I observe at home?

Relative rest during the first post surgery days is necessary. In short time, the patient returns to his/her work, as well as, social duties. Close follow up by the surgeon is important. Thus, the patient is scheduled for control appointments and after this term by phone calls and after that term by videoconference because there are always questions remaining and the patient wants to keep in touch with his/her specialist.
